Casas Da Vereda was designed to minimize its impact on the environment and be energy efficient. The architect, Dirk Mayer, strived to maintain harmony between tradition and innovation without sacrificing quality as shown by some of the materials that were used:
Cork, a national and ecological product, in parts of the façade and thermal insulation;
Basalt stone from the island;
Natural paints and plasters;
Storing the water from channels (levadas) and using it for irrigation;
Water is the central element of tranquillity and relaxation at Casas Da Vereda and the garden is organized to create some privacy between the 3 houses by using vegetation.
The Rural House and the small barn are traditional houses of Madeira Island from the early twentieth century. These houses were rebuilt retaining the original outside features. The Eco House is designed to be an energy efficient home and is framed in harmony with the other two units.
