Moinho da Fonte Santa

O Moinho da Fonte Santa funcionou na margem da Ribeira do Lucefecit, no concelho do Alandroal, durante uma boa parte do século XX até que, já ruína, foi comprado e restaurado pelo casal Michael Biberstein e Ana Nobre de Gusmão, que nele viveram e trabalharam durante a última década.

Enquanto residência do casal de artistas, o moinho foi amiúde um ponto de encontro para a família, amigos e visitantes de todos os quadrantes, que o tornariam um lugar singular, à semelhança dos seus anfitriões. Frequentado por artistas plásticos, escritores, e músicos de todas as idades, foi lugar de vários encontros memoráveis, nomeadamente entre um pintor e um realizador, que ficou registado no filme de Fernando Lopes, “O Meu Amigo Mike ao Trabalho”. Foi também um dos cenários principais do filme “A Espada e a Rosa” de João Nicolau. onde Michael Biberstein contracena com José Mário Branco e Luís Miguel Cintra, entre outros, no papel de “a Rosa”.

Após o falecimento de Michael Biberstein em Maio de 2013, Ana Nobre de Gusmão e a família Biberstein-Gusmão abriram caminho para a criação de um programa de residências artísticas, com o intuito de alimentar a vivência e atmosfera partilhadas nesta casa e potenciar novos encontros, como tantas vezes aconteceu no passado.

Assim, o Moinho da Fonte Santa irá oferecer tanto workshops / projectos integrados na comunidade local, bem como estadias mais prolongadas para artistas visuais, músicos e escritores, reservadas à criação, reflexão e contemplação em estreito contacto com a paisagem alentejana.

O Moinho da Fonte Santa é gerido nesta fase inicial de forma informal, guiado pelo sonho de Michael Biberstein e Ana Nobre de Gusmão de manter o Moinho da Fonte Santa em movimento.

Moinho da Fonte Santa was a working mill on the bank of the Lucefécit Creek, in the county of Alandroal, during a good part of the twentieth century until, already in ruins, it was purchased and restored by the couple Michael Biberstein and Ana Nobre de Gusmão who lived and worked on it during the last decade.

As permanent residence of these two artists, the mill often gathered family, friends and visitors from abroad, making it an unique place with unique hosts. Visited by artists, writers and musicians of all ages, the mill hosted several memorable encounters, namely between a painter and a filmmaker, in Fernando Lopes’ documentary My Friend Mike at Work. Fonte Santa was also one of the main film sets for The Sword and the Rose, João Nicolau’s feature, where Michael Biberstein plays the role of “the Rose”, along with José Mário Branco and Luís Miguel Cintra, among others.

Following the passing of Michael Biberstein in May 2013, Ana Nobre de Gusmão and the Biberstein-Gusmão family gave way to the foundation of an artist residency program, fueled by the desire to further nurture the atmosphere and experiences shared in this house, that may spark future encounters, as it happened so often in the past.

Thus, Moinho da Fonte Santa will offer both workshops / projects integrated within the local community, and extended stays for visual artists, musicians and writers who wish to dedicate themselves to artistic creation, reflection and contemplation in close contact with the Alentejo landscape.

Moinho da Fonte is operating at this early stage in an informal way, guided by the dream of Michael Biberstein and Ana Nobre de Gusmão of keeping the Fonte Santa mill in motion.
