João Mendes Ribeiro nasceu em Coimbra em 1960.
Arquitecto pela Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto (1986), onde lecionou entre 1989 e 1991. Doutorado em Arquitectura, especialidade Teoria e História, pela Universidade de Coimbra, 2009. Docente da disciplina de Projecto no Departamento de Arquitectura da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra desde 1991, onde foi assistente do Professor Arquitecto Fernando Távora entre 1991 e 1998.
O seu trabalho foi objecto de várias publicações nacionais e internacionais, em países como a Alemanha, Argentina, Bélgica, Brasil, Chile, China, Dinamarca, Eslováquia, Espanha, Estados Unidos da América, França, Holanda, Hong Kong, Hungria, Itália, Japão, México, Peru, República Checa, Reino Unido, Rússia, Suíça e Tailândia.
Participou em inúmeras exposições, de entre as quais se destacam a Representação Portuguesa na Mostra Internacional da 9.ª e 10.ª edição da Bienal de Veneza de Arquitectura, em 2004 e 2006, a 11.ª Quadrienal de Cenografia e Arquitectura de Praga em 2007 e a 7.ª Bienal de Arquitectura de São Paulo em 2007.
Reconhecido com diversos prémios e distinções, a nível nacional e internacional, entre os quais se destacam: Prémio Architécti, 1997 e 2000 (Lisboa); Highly Commended, AR awards for emerging architecture, 2000 (Londres); Prémio Diogo de Castilho 2003, 2007 e 2011 (Coimbra); Premis FAD d’Arquitectura i Interiorisme, 2004 (Barcelona); Gold Medal for Best Stage Design, 11th International Exhibition of Scenography and Theatre Architecture – Prague Quadrennial 2007 (Praga); IV Prémio Enor, na categoria Portugal, 2009 (Vigo); Prémio BIAU, VIII Bienal Ibero-Americana de Arquitectura e Urbanismo, 2012 (Cádiz). Nomeado para o European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies Van Der Rohe Award 2001, 2005, 2011, 2013 e 2015 (Barcelona); seleccionado no European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies Van Der Rohe Award 2001 e 2015 (Barcelona); finalista da II e IV Bienal Iberoamericana de Arquitectura e Engenharia Civil, 2000 e 2004 (Cidade do México e Lima); finalista dos Premis FAD d’Arquitectura i Interiorisme, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006 e 2012 (Barcelona); finalista do Prémio Enor, 2009 , 2011 e 2014 (Vigo).
Recebeu, em 2007, o prémio AICA da Associação Internacional de Críticos de Arte/Ministério da Cultura, atribuído pelo conjunto da sua obra. Em 2006 foi distinguido pela Presidência da Republica com a Comenda da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique.

João Mendes Ribeiro was born in Coimbra in 1960.
Graduated from the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto, where he also taught between 1989 and 1991. He took his PHD in Architecture from Universidade de Coimbra, in 2009, in the field Theory and History. He has been teaching Architectural Design in the Departamento de Arquitectura da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra since 1991, where was the assistant of Professor Architect Fernando Távora between 1991 e 1998.
His work has been widely published, both in national and international publications, in countries such as Germany, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Denmark, Slovakia, Spain, United States, France, Holland, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, Russia, Switzerland and Thailand.
He took part in a large number of national and international exhibitions, including the Portuguese Representation at the 9th and 10th Venice Biennale, in 2004 and 2006; the 11th Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space, in 2007; and the 7th São Paulo Architecture Bienal, in 2007.
His work has been awarded national and internationally, with prizes such as the Architécti Prize 1997 and 2000, Lisbon; Highly Commended, AR awards for emerging architecture, London, 2000; the Diogo de Castilho Prize 2003, 2007 and 2011, Coimbra; the Premis FAD d’Arquitectura i Interiorisme 2004, Barcelona; the AICA Awards 2007; the Gold Medal for Best Stage Design, 11th International Exhibition of Scenography and Theatre Architecture – Prague Quadrennial 2007, Prague; VIII Ibero-American Architecture and Urbanism Biennial (VIII BIAU) 2012, Cadiz and the nomination for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies Van der Rohe Award 2001, 2005, 2011, 2013 and 2015, Barcelona.
He was shortlisted for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies Van der Rohe Award in 2001 and 2015 and was a finalist in the II and IV Ibero-American Architecture and Civil Engineering Biennial, in 2000 and 2004 (Mexico City and Lima), in the Premis FAD 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2012 (Barcelona) and in the Enor Prize 2009, 2011 and 2014 (Vigo).
He received, in 2007, the AICA Award for Visual Arts and Architecture given by the International Association of Art Critics and the Portuguese Ministry of Culture, assigned by his body of work. In 2006 he was distinguished with the Comenda da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique by the President of Portugal.
