Ponta do Topo

P. do Topo is the most eastern place of the magnificent S.Jorge Island, where the Village of Topo and the emblematic Ponta do Topo Lighthouse stand.
It was the first spotted place by the settlers and where they landed, hence the name Topo, meaning seen/encountered/stumbled.
The village starts by the sea, close to the Ilhéu and goes up the mountains towards the interior of the Island, in a somewhat abrupt way, leaving few plain land spaces adequate for human use.
Ponta do Topo is one of the most historical places in the Island. It was on the coast of P. doTopo that the first settlers of the Island landed and started the first settlement of S. Jorge.
It was the place where Willelm van der Hagen, originally from Flanders, settled translating his name to Guilherme da Silveira.
Circa 25% of the current population of the Island descend from him.

This is a place of great natural interest, housing several habitats which must be preserved and studied, and an important Laurel Forest alongside cultivated and grazing fields, typical of the beautiful S. Jorge Island, where natural patrimony and the traditional use of the soil coexist perfectly.
This Natural Reservation is about 1km away from the Ilhéu do Topo, the nesting place of an important community of Seagulls, as well as home of important especially protected fauna and flora species, due to their natural and environmental importance.
