Soon after independence, plan to establish a National museum of Pakistan portraying the personality of newly born state was considered by the Federal Government . A national museum was established in Frere Hall at Karachi and was inaugurated on 17th April, 1950 by Khawaja Nazimudden, then Governor General of Pakistan. The Museum was shifted to the present premises (located in Burns Garden, Dr. Zia-ud-Din Ahmed Road). After shifting of Federal capital to Islamabad the necessity of Establishment of National Museum arises. In view of the importance of National Museum of Pakistan at Islamabad, a plot measuring 3.24 acres located at Shakar Parian near lok virsa complex was earmarked by the C.D.A for the said project.in 1970. A nucleus of the National Museum of Pakistan, Islamabad was established in a private house in E-7 Sector, Islamabad in 1994. In 1998 the project was rolled back and its display artifacts were stored in Taxila Museum. In 2002 as per orders of the President of Pakistan the nucleus of a museum at Islamabad was again established in a small hall of Sir Syed Memorial Building, while remaining artifacts are stored in Taxila Museum.
