Ladakh (formerly known as the Little Tibet) is situated at the world’s mightiest mountain ranges; Geographically Ladakh lies bound between the crests of the Great Himalayan range, to its south, and of the Karakoram range, to its north. Overall, about 6 different mountain ranges either pass through or form the boundaries of Ladakh, making it, truly, the 'Land of the High passes'. Going from South to North, we'll encounter these ranges in order. 1.Great Himalayan range: Forms the southern boundary, and falls down into the Zanskar and Suru valleys. 2. Zanskar range : Forms northern wall of the Zanskar and Suru valleys and the southern wall of the Indus valley. 3.Ladakh range : Northern wall of the Indus valley and the southern wall of the Nubra and Shyok valleys. It extends down into Tibet and is known as the Kailash range there. 4.Pangong range: Its an impressive offshoot of the Ladakh range. Divided from the main range by the Tangste river and forms the southern boundary of the Pangong Lake. It is a more imposing chain of mountains than its parent range, with a few of its sawtooth peaks reaching over 6700m while the peaks of its parent range rarely go over 6000m. 5.Karakoram Range : Forms part of the northern boundary of Ladakh. Rises up and forms the northern wall of the Nubra and Shyok valleys. 6.Chang Chemo Range and Aksai Chin plateau: Although initially part of Ladakh, it is now under the (illegal) occupation of China. The Change Chemo range forms the northern boundary of the Pangong lake and continues into the disputed Aksai Chin plateau.

The dispute over the control of the Aksai Chin plateau is the reason for the 1962 war between India and China when India discovered that China was building a road through the Aksai Chin plateau to connect its Xinjiang region with Tibet
"Lakdah will also become a trekkers's paradise after the start of mountaineering to these peaks. It is already a top destination for foreigners. The opening up of the peaks would give a multi-fold economic boost to the state in the tourism sector,

The Centre had already opened up various out-of bounds and inner-line areas - Chiktan, Batalik, Turtuk, Pachatanag and Tyakshi - in Ladakh for foreigners as Home Ministry and Defence Ministry had given clearance for throwing open the protected areas. Under current guidelines, any mountain expedition team has to seek permission from Ministries of Defence and Home besides Indian Mountaineering Federation (IMF). However, after the peaks are thrown open to the public, the mountaineers have to register only with IMF. All these peaks are located close to the Sino-Indian and Indo-Pak border in Ladakh region in Jammu and Kashmir. The peaks to be opened for trekking and mountaineering range in the height of 3000 meters to 7877 meters mostly in Eastern Karakoram region of Ladakh in Nubru, Turtuk, Pongang valley areas in Ladakh.
They include the highest 7877 meters high Kun peak in Panikar belt of Kargil, Saser Kangri (7415 m), Saer Kangri-11 (7513 m), Saser Kangri-111 (7495 m), Mamostong, Rimpo Group, Apsaras, Arjuna, Barmal, Brammah, Brammah's wife, Advasol, Barmal, Barnaj, Cathedral, Chapra, Crooked finger, Droikant, Flat top, Eiger, Gulpal Kangri, Hangshu, Haptal,Lhalung Durung, Matho Kangri, Nun, Parha Kangri, Pinnacle, Shivling, Tanak, White Needle, z-3 hill and Z-1 peak.
Ladakh, also called moonland, has always attracted a large number of foreigners.
Of the nearly 60,000 tourists that visited Ladakh in 2012, nearly 34,000 were foreigners and rest 26,000 were domestic tourists.
Ladakh has a centuries old history and an incredible cultural heritage which is unique for the sub-continent.
