Sociedade Martins Sarmento

A Sociedade Martins Sarmento é uma Instituição cultural de Utilidade Pública fundada em Guimarães, em 1881, em homenagem ao arqueólogo vimaranense Francisco Martins Sarmento (1833-1899), cujos estudos científicos atraíram para Guimarães a atenção dos principais centros da cultura europeia do seu tempo. A sede da SMS, situada no centro de Guimarães, ocupa um imponente edifício projetado pelo Arquiteto Marques da Silva e estende-se ao claustro gótico do antigo Convento de S. Domingos.

O Museu Arqueológico da SMS é um dos mais antigos museus arqueológicos portugueses. Começou a ser instalado em 1885, a partir de um núcleo central constituído pelo espólio que pertenceu a Martins Sarmento, e distribui-se pelas dependências do extinto Convento de S. Domingos (escadaria moderna e claustro gótico, cujo segundo piso data de finais do século XIX, quando se instalou o Museu).

No espaço da sede da SMS encontram-se também instalados a Biblioteca e o Arquivo. A Biblioteca da SMS é uma das mais importantes bibliotecas privadas portuguesas, destacando-se o excecional fundo de livro antigo e o fundo local. O Arquivo documental reúne cerca de trinta mil peças, do século XII até à atualidade.

São também espaços da SMS a Citânia de Briteiros e o Museu da Cultura Castreja, também em Briteiros.


The Martins Sarmento Society (MSS) is a cultural institution founded in Guimarães in 1881 as an homage to the archaeologist Francisco Martins Sarmento (1833-1899), whose scientific researches attracted to Guimarães the attention of the main European culture centres of its time. The head office of the MSS, located in the Guimarães town centre, is installed in an majestic building projected by the Architect Marques da Silva and extends to the gothic cloister of the former São Domingos convent.

The Martins Sarmento Society Archaeological Museum is one of the oldest portuguese archaeological museums. It began to be installed in 1885 from a core collection that use to belong to Francisco Martins Sarmento, and extends through the old grounds of the extinguished São Domingos convent (modern age staircase and gothic cloister, whose upper floor dates back to the 19th century, when the Museum was installed).

The Library and the Archive are as well installed in the space of the head office of the MSS. The Library of the MSS is one the most important private owned libraries in Portugal, from which stands out the section of antique books and the local section. The Archive includes about thirty thousand documents, from the 12th century to nowadays.

The National Monument of Citânia de Briteiros and the nearby Castro Culture Museum are also spaces administered by the MSS.
