Cerdeira Village Art & Craft

The aim of our project is to transform our village into the Portuguese craft center, to make it a place for sharing and communicating with artists and creative individuals. It’s about giving new live and meaning to a very special place, Cerdeira, one of the classified schist villages in the ”Serra da Lousã”, a small place surrounded by fresh brooks and silence in an ocean of mountains in the center of Portugal.

Abandoned in the late 1970th by its rural population for social and economic reasons, the architectural heritage is nowadays almost completely restored including ecological and sustainable aspects.

Cerdeira is one of the most active members of the Schist Villages Network. Today it’s a privileged place for artists, to stay and get inspired at our residencies, to exhibit at our annual contemporary craft exhibition “Elementos à Solta – Art meets Nature”. For all the people who love nature, who like to live new experiences, learn old craft techniques or simply want to find contemporary ways to express themselves. The identity and the authenticity of the place, and the positive energy and persistence of this quiet international association, is what make it so special.

A ideia base é tornar a aldeia da Cerdeira num centro internacional das artes e ofícios, sobretudo na componente artesanato contemporâneo, habitualmente designado por Craft. Isso passa por criar as condições para o acolhimento e para o trabalho de artistas nacionais e estrangeiros que escolham a Cerdeira para a realização dos seus projectos artísticos, assim como para participarem em acções de formação e workshops, permitindo assim a intersecção entre visões, culturas, técnicas e experiências.

A responsabilidade dessa actividade é assegurada pela Associação Cerdeira Art & Craft, cujo programa já foi classificado como de Interesse Cultural pela Secretaria de Estado da Cultura. Estão já em curso e planeadas numerosas residências de artistas de vários países e programados Master Workshops sobre diversos temas. Anualmente, em Julho, é realizado o festival de artes "Elementos à Solta - Art Meets Nature", que atrai à aldeia dezenas de artistas nacionais e internacionais e centenas de visitantes de todo o País.
